We are optometrists based in Melbourne, Australia. After many years of working as practitioners, we noticed the significant amount of waste produced by the industry. We wanted to see change. We believe we could make it happen. After endless coffee meetings (like true Melburnians), we created Mari & Clay.
Founded on the passion of combining great design and functionality, Mari & Clay provide modern, sustainable sunglasses for people who appreciate timeless and thoughtful designs.
The name Mari & Clay is inspired by ocean and earth. “Mari”, like the word marine, and “Clay”, originating from earth.
It's a gentle nod of appreciation to the Australian surf and bush.
We’ve reinvented the best of the classics. Bringing it back to the basics. To ensure you get the best, we design a small number of styles for each collection. This allows us to be meticulous with every detail. We focus on quality, not quantity, to create a wardrobe essential, one that you can continue to love and reach for year after year.
Sustainable products are no longer an option, but a necessity for our future. It should be the mainstream, not the alternative.
Sustainability is at the core of our values. We source materials that are gentle on the planet. We support DHL's goal to be carbon-neutral by 2050 and actively choose to use their Go Green program for freight.
In addition to working closely with our suppliers to develop high-quality sunglasses, we ensure the workers are well looked after in an ethical working and living condition with fair wages and normal working hours.
We have also developed our own Mari & Clay give back program, because we believe circularity is a key step to a sustainable future.
This is only the beginning. We are constantly looking for ways to improve our environmental and ethical impact. From sourcing materials and suppliers, to our packaging and the charities we support, we’re working hard to live our values.
Our mission is to inspire making mindful choices for a better environment. We believe our everyday choices can create collective change. Join us as we explore thoughtful ways to live and respect our planet.
“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” — Margaret Mead
