FAQs

  • WHAT MATERIAL IS MARI & CLAY SUNGLASSES MADE FROM?

All of our frames are made from bio-acetate which is an innovative formula developed by the laboratories of Italian company Mazzucchelli 1849. Bio-acetate has been tested to be 100% biodegradable. You can find out more about bio-acetate here. <hyperlink to Our Materials>

  • WHAT DOES BIODEGRADABLE MEAN?

Biodegradable refers to the ability of the material to break down and return to nature.

Traditional plastics can take many hundreds, or up to a thousand, years to biodegrade. We are proud to offer sunglasses made out of bio-acetate that has been tested to be 100% biodegradable in 115 days. That said, the technology is still in early stages and its biodegradability is tested under controlled industrial conditions. As developments in the science around biodegradability advance, we will evolve with what is available and commit to  continuous improvement.

In the meanwhile, you can be certain that your bio-acetate sunglasses are durable and will not disintegrate if you misplace it in the garden.

  • WHAT KIND OF LENSES COME WITH YOUR SUNGLASSES?

All our sunglasses are all fitted with polarised lenses, made from combining seven layers of protective material.

-Layer 1:  Polarizing layer that provides 99% polarization that absorbs glare - this will enhance your vision.

-Layer 2 & 3:  Durable layers that are designed to withstand harsh environments.

-Layer 4 & 5: UV absorbing layers that absorb harmful ultraviolet rays.

-Layer 6 & 7: Shock proof layers that increase impact and scratch resistance!

Our lenses are classified as category 3 general purpose sunglasses with 100% UV protection. Please note they are NOT SUITABLE FOR DRIVING IN TWILIGHT OR AT NIGHT.

  • WHAT ARE POLARIZED LENSES GOOD FOR?

Polarized lenses are popular amongst people who spend a lot of time near the water as they reduce glare from light reflecting off the surface of water better than any other sunglasses. They are great for people who enjoy boating, fishing or going to the beach.

Polarised sunglasses are also helpful for driving. They reduce reflections from hoods of other vehicles, slippery roads on a rainy day, and light-coloured pavements.

  • WHY POLARISED LENSES MIGHT NOT BE FOR YOU

Polarized lenses are excellent for the outdoors but are not for everyone. When you wear polarized lenses and look at your phone or certain car windows, you may see rainbow reflections. If you turn your head at a certain angle (usually 45 degrees), they will even turn black!. This effect occurs when you look at other polarized surfaces through your polarized lenses. Because of this, pilots are actually not allowed to wear polarized sunglasses because their cockpit and dashboard screens are polarized!
